Four Top Carpet Care Tips

Looking after the carpets in your home is important! Not only does it help to ensure your home looks great for visitors, but it helps to extend the life of your carpet and keep it looking fresh for years to come.

As a retailer of carpets in Sheffield, we want to help you look after your new carpet from us. So here are four top carpet care tips…

  1. Sort spillages immediately.
Spillages happen – no matter how careful you are! When a spillage happens on your carpet, deal with it straight away before it soaks in. Use a cloth or some kitchen roll and dab gently to remove most of the liquid. Then use some carpet cleaner to clean the carpet thoroughly. Never rub at the carpet to remove a stain – you will only make it worse!
  2. Vacuum often.
As much as most of us don’t enjoy it, vacuuming your carpets regularly is essential to protecting your carpet and keeping it in good condition. Aim to vacuum all carpets at least weekly, and those in entrance areas twice a week. Make an effort to vacuum the hard to reach spaces and areas under furniture at least once a month as it is easy for dirt to accumulate in these areas.
  3. Think about rearranging the furniture in a room every 6 months if possible.
You’ll notice when you move a heavy piece of furniture that you see flattened areas of carpet. Many people don’t realise this, but it can ruin the thread of your carpet. Rearranging the furniture in a room every few months can help reduce this damage. It also provides the perfect opportunity to give the whole of your carpet a good hoover.
  4. Do what you can to reduce dirt being trampled into the carpet.
Some simple house rules can help to reduce the amount of dirt from outside being brought in and trampled underfoot into your carpets. Make sure both people that live in your house and visitors take their footwear off when they enter your house. This not only stops dirt but also prevents scuff marks from shoes on your carpets.

One of the best ways to reduce the time you spend caring for your carpets down the line is choosing the right carpet for the situation in the first place. If a carpet is in a high traffic location, you need a tougher and more durable carpet than for example in a bedroom. If you have small children, it is best to go for something that is easy to clean as spillages will occur often. Spend some time researching the right new carpet for your requirements. This will save you time and money down the line!
